The New Z-Car Is On The Way – What’s The Power, What’s The Price? We Take Our Best Guesses Here

(By Tom Lohnes) – After 12 years on sale, the Nissan 370Z is finally being replaced. That’s right, Nissan just put a teaser image up for a new Z car, a new Frontier pickup, and what appears to be an R36 GT-R. But the Z is the main focus of today because the GT-R will most likely be unattainable to the average person and the new Z will.

Starting with the big thing, the nameplate is most likely going to be the 400Z or 400ZX, and those numbers will likely mean horsepower and not engine displacement. The actual engine could be a detuned version of Nissan’s already insane VR38DETT Twin-Turbo V6 from the GT-R. But, Infiniti recently refreshed the Q50 and Q60, replacing the tried and true VQ37 motor in favor of a new VR30DETT which makes between 300 and 400 horsepower. Judging by the new Z’s main rival, the Toyota GR Supra, which is rated at 382 from factory, the latter version of those engines will be chosen. Transmission Choices should be a 6-speed manual or (hopefully) a 8-speed automatic, but Nissan could go Nissan on us and have a CVT as an option. The 400Z should be RWD, and sport a coupe and roadster variant.

How much will this awesome looking sports car cost? Well, it will probably start at around $40,000 and maybe go up into the $60,000 range for a loaded-up roadster. (for reference, a loaded-up BMW Z4 M40i costs more than 80 large. That’s a lot!
