This 1964 Falcon Futura Convertible Walks The Line Between Something That Should Be Driven As Is Or Hot Rodded

This 1964 Falcon Futura Convertible Walks The Line Between Something That Should Be Driven As Is Or Hot Rodded

We realize at some point there will come a day when there are no more really cool old cars lurking in barns and garages just waiting to be discovered. We feel as though that we’re a long way off from then because in today’s world it is about a weekly occurrence that someone tips us off to a cool car that has stood the test of time or has owned one themselves. This 1964 Falcon Futura convertible is really close to having the survivor tag hung on it. We’re disqualifying it though because of the fact that it had the top replaced at some point. Other than that? It has the original six banger engine, all the original hubcaps, original interior, all of the factory stainless, etc.

The natural debate that arises at this point with us away, surrounds what to do next with the car. Do you look at this car and think that it needs to stand as a preserved example of he breed or do you look at it and think that it would be a clean, unmolested, unpacked basis for a killer Falcon project car. Yes, it is a convertible so it  would require stiffening the chassis if you really wanted to make the thing into a handling bad ass but if you were going to do a mild street machine build on it with some nice wheels and tires, a heated small block, and bolt on suspension the car would be a sweet thing to behold.

There is some value in preservation, though and it would be far cheaper to basically clean this car up and make it into a really, really nice restored driver than it would be to hot rod it. That being said, logic has never really worked for us around here before so why start now?

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

As the Mustang and the Falcon share the same chassis and running gear, this beauty could be fitted with all the upgrades for brakes, suspension and cooling. Then swap in a 289 or 302 running EFI and electronic ignition bolted on to a T5 to make a full 5 seater convertible that will stand out from the crowd and return reasonable fuel economy which could be a good thing when the price of gas starts to skyrocket…

I had one of these years ago and they are fun cars. A company makes a aluminum head for these sixes, so get one of those, a cam and header from Clifford Performance and have a hot six to keep things interesting and leave the rest.

I’d be happier than a pig in $h!t with it either way. Clean and detail that 6 and have fun cruising or drop in a little EFI’s 289 or 302….nothing crazy but just enough to scoot it along a little faster than a Model T…..

    fix the floors …
    MII front suspension…
    swap in a efi 4 o/d drive train from a ranger …

drive the hell out of it @ 20 + mpg city

convertibles flex too much to make race cars out of

“Engine runs, trans shifts, brakes work, needs floor pan work, $9000. ” I think I’ll pass thank you. For 9k I know I can find a turn key Falcon.
