Battle Of The Big Boys: This 1993 V8 Sedan Shootout Is Pretty Awesome – Depreciation Made The Cheap Quick

“We’ve heard rumors that the V8 luxury sedan is an endangered species,” said John Davis in 1993. While the luxury sedan is still around today (in ever shrinking numbers) the V8 part of it is definitely winding down. Turbocharged V6 engines and even in some cases four cylinder engines are producing more grunt than these things did in 1993 and delivering the kind of power and performance that a bucks up buyer wants to have when they hit the throttle.

An admission. I have loved big sedans since I was a kid and my favorite cars to hop into in the press fleet world are the large sedans. Why? They always drive so good, they have power, they are comfortable as hell, and they are so much freaking better than SUVs at everything but driving on the beach or over the occasional curb at the local wholesale food distributor. They are what cars are supposed to be, in my mind anyway. Back in 1993 when this was made, I definitely wanted one of each of the machines you will see here. Maybe all but the Mercedes as I have never really been that into those things. The Caddy? Hell yes. The big BMW? Oh did I. The Infinity? I just remember it being so weird to look at that it kept my attention. Hell, I’d drive all of these today!

The downside to these cars, then and now is that they absolutely plummet in value harder and faster than anything else on the market. Why? They always have doo-dads on them that fail or a zooty engine that isn’t that great with reliability, etc. How quickly do you think the advanced seats in the Caddy broke? Six months in?

They’re large and lovely and I want one. That’s all.
