(By Eric Rood) – Here in the U.S. vintage road racing is pretty popular and gaining in popularity, particularly with thriving organizations like the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) and events like The Mitty at Road Atlanta and the high-brow Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. Across the pond, there’s plenty of vintage road racing to be found, the Europeans have developed a penchant for vintage rallying and, if you’re even remotely interested in rallying or cars or history or fun at all, it’s a grand day out.
Last weekend’s Costa Brava Rally in Spain brought out some fantastic old hardware, from stalwart rally classics like the not-crappy, never-sold-stateside Ford Escort Mark I to legendary Italian rally classics like the banshee-wailing Lancia Stratos and one of the original Group B Insanemobiles, the Lancia 037. Yeah, I know there are no V8s in rallying, but it’s hard to argue with a classic BMW E30 M3 being caned around winding Catalan mountain roads with its gutteral straight-six song echoing off the hills. Enjoy the show, captured beautifully by FTT-Rally, and crank up the sound.
