Stickin’ It To ‘Em: The Toyota Supra Has Finally Gained A Factory Manual Transmission Option

Stickin’ It To ‘Em: The Toyota Supra Has Finally Gained A Factory Manual Transmission Option

(By Tom Lohnes) – The day is finally here. The Current-generation Toyota Supra can now be had with three pedals just like all of its predecessors. Since it launched at the Detroit auto show in 2019, A90-generation Supra has had a few major problems. One, which is probably going to be a good thing in the long run, is it’s BMW-ness. The second is that it looked a little funny at first, and the third is that it was only offered with a rather good 8-speed automatic. Well, for all of you auto-haters out there, Toyota offers you this.

With the launch of the Supra, Toyota promised improvements every year. For 2021, it got more power, for 2022, it got better suspension bits and a new special edition, and for 2023, it gets the best change, a manual transmission. Aimed directly at the 2023 Nissan Z, the Supra uses a “tailor-made” 6-speed manual that honestly looks like it should have been there since 2020. This transmission is available in the states in the 3.0, 3.0 premium, and A91-MT special edition. If you don’t know what that is, it is essentially just a nice cognac leather interior to go with your stick shift. As you probably already would’ve guessed by the “MT” in the name, it is exclusively offered with a manual. The automatic is a no-cost option on 3.0 and 3.0 premium models.

Even with the manual making it a slower all-around car, the Supra is still a beast. With “382” horsepower (people have consistently been getting 350+ at the wheel stock) and 369 pounds of twist, the Supra should still achieve 60 miles per hour in under 5 seconds, which is right on par if not faster than the Z. Outside, it still looks good to some, goofy for others, and the interior is still very BMW, which is for the better.

Overall, a manual Supra isn’t a huge change, but it definitely is a needed one. These should start hitting dealers this summer, and expect the A91-MT model to sell out within a few hours. Base pricing should remain the same as the 2022 model.
