Do you have a spare Mazda Miata sitting around? Do you dream of driving a prewar, single seater racecar one day? Well, grab your wrenches because you’ve got work to do.
Yes that’s right, you can make a prewar Alfa Romeo Tipo 184 racecar out of any generation Mazda MX-5 you please. This kit comes with some instruction on how to modify your Miata’s chassis, a new body, and that’s about it. To say this thing is homebrewed is a slight understatement. The good part about having to build the car yourself, however, is that you can go any way you want with it. If you want to conserve the underpowered essence of these racecars, then you go stock engine. If you want an aggressive, terrifying driving experience, an LS slides into a Miata quite well. Any way you go, you’ll have a really cool “racecar” in your garage that is completely road-legal, unlike the real thing. Once you get used to driving it, you could also take it and partake in races against other kit cars.
This is obviously not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love how you can take just about the cheapest sports car you can buy, a Miata, and turn it in to something completely different. But, of course, beware the risk of hand-building a prewar racecar in your own garage, because things can go really wrong really quick but that can be said for just about anything.
I wonder if my dad wants to take one of these on after we’re done with the tractor…
This is awesome on so many levels
When it comes to engine swaps, how about a Buick Fireball 8? That’ll give you the correct number of exhaust pipes out the left side. Not sure how it would fit in the chassis though.
Who produces this kit?

I want one …. but importing from England would be a nightmare ….
I believe Flyin’ Miata is trying to organize a US group buy. Pricing looks like it will be around $10K.
