From the whimsical, to the weird, to the genius, to the diabolical the 24 Hours of LeMons racing series has inspired hundreds, hell, thousands of car builds over the time it has existed that would never have otherwise taken place. Yes, you can show up with a beater BMW and have a shot a winning but the reality is that you can show up with ANYTHING and have the time of your life. This insanely long and equally as awesome list, compiled by Eric Rood for Roadkill.com proves it. Things like a V-twin powered Pruis, a diesel powered Corvette, the airplane and camper bodied machines shown here and literally like 100 other builds are shown, explained, and reviewed. The number of things that made us yell BangShift Approved when we saw them numbered in the dozens for sure.
Beyond the engine swaps are the people who have a theme and just carry it to the craziest ends you can imagine. Yes, it goes from racing to sight gag in some instances but the reality is that people participate in series like the 24 Hours of LeMons lots more for the fun than for the thrill of outrunning a flathead powered Dodge truck or a 440 Chrysler powered Mercedes. There are those that like to bag on the series for the fact that it is not as hardcore as say, NASCAR and we think those guys are missing the point. How many thousands of people have bene inspired to take a heap they saw sitting on the side of the road and invest their time an ingenuity into making it a racer? That’s healthy, cool stuff that beats the crap out of those that sit not he couch and fling poo at their work, right? We sure think so.
You gotta read this list. Not everything will appeal to you but there is enough stuff to stop you in your tracks and make you look that it is well worth it and we meant that in the hot rodding/gearhead sense, not the cool costumes and ironic theme sense.
