Unveiled: The Abarth 124 Spider Rally – Finally, A Fiat That Is Worth Looking At!

In case you are a little confused as to what you’re looking at, let’s start from the top: It’s a Mazda Miata at it’s core, that Fiat trims out with some body differences and the 160 horsepower, 1.4L turbocharged four-banger that comes in the 500 Abarth edition (which means that instead of Fiat badges, you see a shield with a scorpion on it). The Fiat 124 Spyder itself is neat, if you like little roadsters like the Miata, but this one something else entirely. This is the Abarth 124 Spider Rally, and it’s designed to go play in the FIA’s R-GT rally category. The Spider Rally pumps out 300 horsepower from a 1.8L turbo four cylinder and a six-speed sequential gearbox. The interior is gutted and caged, and four-way adjustable dampers are fitted. This means that as prepared, the Spider Rally can play in competitive rallies and even WRC events as a two-wheel-drive entry. It’s not going to threaten a current WRC car, but seeing this car rooster-tailing down a rally stage would basically kill any hope of making fun of this car’s Fiat roots. The company claims that the 124 Spider Rally will race in 2017, so we will have to wait a year and see.
