Here Comes The Quickness: The Upcoming Toyota Corolla GR Hatch Is Shaping Up To Be A Pocket Rocket

Here Comes The Quickness: The Upcoming Toyota Corolla GR Hatch Is Shaping Up To Be A Pocket Rocket

(By Tom Lohnes) – Toyota isn’t exactly the manufacturer you think of when it comes to hot hatchbacks. Sure, they had the famous Celica all-trac that cheated its way to multiple WRC victories, and the 8,250-RPM Matrix XRS that died in 2014 along with the 2ZZ-GE inline-4. But still, they aren’t exactly on Ford’s or VW’s level when it comes to sporty daily drivers. But Toyota aims to improve their portfolio next year with the GR Corolla, and it just got two new teasers.

First off, both two of these teasers involve 2 different vehicles. One is a highly camoed GR Corolla prototype, the other a bright blue Corolla hatch that Toyota is “Advertising”, but it’s really just a dummy full of subtle teasers for the new hot hatch. The first teaser includes an interior shot of the Corolla hatch with some very well-hidden clues. The first, semi-obvious clue is in the gauge cluster. In the place of where some other readout would be is the code G.16. If you didn’t know, that’s the engine code for the 1.6L turbo 3-cylinder that will be powering this beast. The engine has already proven itself in the GR Yaris, so we know it’s a good one. The second, better-hidden clue is smack dab in the middle of the Navigation display, which is focused on a road labeled GR-Four. This of course is the name of the AWD system that will be connected to the G16. And lastly, in the very corner of the image, you will see the prototype looking extra racy from afar. There could be more to this image, but that’s all I could find for now.

The second teaser came out later, and it sure is a lot simpler. This very obvious teaser shows the two vehicles once again, this time at a shipping yard. The blue standard model is in plain sight, and you can see the hot one hiding in the shadows behind a few containers. Simple, but not totally noticeable at a glance.

Overall, I am very excited for this thing. It is the first US-spec sporty Toyota in years that is actually a Toyota, and that is a very good thing. These teasers are far from done, so stick around for more.

I’ve read that the engine may be a 4 cyl, turbo 1600CC, around 280 HP. I know that the Turbo 3 banger in the Yaris will outrun a Civic R. It’s lighter, better power to weight ratio. I wish Toyota would add more HP to the GR. Maybe a turbo 2000CC would be better. Could easily make 300 plus HP. C’mon Toyota, why let Honda have the higher HP engine? The Corolla weighs more than the Yaris, so more HP. More, more more…..

According to what I’ve read, the engine is a four-cylinder turbo 1600CC engine with roughly 280 horsepower. I’m confident that the Yaris’ Turbo 3 engine will outperform a Civic R. It’s lighter, better power to weight ratio. I hope Toyota will increase the GR’s horsepower. Perhaps a turbo 2000CC would be preferable.
