We’ve showed lots of video from the Nurburgring over the years here on BangShift. The famed German race track is one of the few places on Earth that you can plunk down some money and take whatever it is you are driving around as fast as it will go. Normally we show you people in SUVs or other ill-equipped cars running out of talent on the course and causing grave damage to their vehicles. Today’s variation on that theme is a bit different as we have a very capable car in the Lotus Exige and a driver who as doing a seemingly decent job navigating the course, until he hit a patch of oil at high speed.
The crash itself is pretty hardcore and the driver is lucky to escape with no injuries. What’s wild to watch though it the airbag deployment and just ho much his helmeted head flops around the car when the wreck is happening. This is perfect video for anyone considering a HANS device for their own safety. The dude is lucky that he didn’t break his neck. The helmet does appear to have some mounts for tethers of some kind but they’re not being used here. By the looks of the speed involved in the crash, we’re thinking that the little Lotus is toast. Thankfully, the car did its job protecting the driver.
