It is ratty, it is cheap, it is set up to go like the wind and scare the daylights out of everyone in or around it. This is a low-buck LS Chevette and it is for sale right now. BangShifter Steve Metcalf found the link for this little monster and sent it to us. We’re seeing both sides of this equation and while there will be those that really hammer this car for its crudity, we cannot help ourself but to smile when we look at it. It would get sideways looks, awkward glances, and all kinds of derision by the paint and polish set but with a five speed and an LS1 under the hood, you have the recipe for just stupid levels of fun. There’s even a roll bar in it just because you never know what’s going to happen next.
Now it is not all cheer and roses with this thing. The $3,500 asking price gets you a running and driving car but it needs head gaskets. The seller says that after he noticed the car losing coolant and running hot he went to a mechanic and got that diagnosis. Because the engine is fully exposed we don’t think that doing that job would be the worst thing and frankly it would be a perfect time to upgrade the heads with some junkyard factory pieces from a later LS2 or something from the aftermarket. The LS1s small bore limit the factory swap head stuff but there’s options galore out there.
The rest of the car can be left as it is but we’d probably go through the brakes and other systems before heading off to terrorize the town. There’s nothing more embarrassing than losing the brakes and piling your hot rod into something immovable.

I’d like to find a way to get the grille back in there and set the radiator back a little, but it’s a dragstrip rat – it doesn’t have to look good to take it racing.

I don’t know why but I really like it. Needs a turbo just to make it even sillier and offend even more people.
With the entire engine’s weight in front of the axle center line, this thing will handle about as well as a hippo on a hockey rink. Don’t try taking a corner faster than 10 mph, or you will learn the meaning of understeer very quickly.

I bought this on Thursday. I retorqued the heads and changed the fluids today. This thing is stupid fast. It actually takes corners pretty decent, I doubt the ls1 weighs much more than the iron 4 cyl that came out. Fastest car I’ve owned
