While he’s not a household name outside of Australia, John Bowe is one of the country’s living legends. Bowe won 15 V8 Supercar races, mostly in the 1990s, but his illustrious racing career also includes a pair of wins in the Bathurst 1000 and a Supercars championship in 1995. The ageless Tasmanian, now 61, still drives regularly in Australian GT racing and, primarily, in the totally killer Touring Car Masters series, where classic American and Australian muscle cars go door-to-door in a proper touring car race. Bowe made waves in the TCM world by selling his absolutely stunning “Mustang Sally” ‘69 Mustang in June, but he has been racing a classic Holden Torana this year.

As a feature of TCM’s multiple races per weekend, one race flips the grid, putting the fast cars to the back of the field. At the round at Sandown Raceway—host of one of the Virgin Supercars Series’ upcoming endurance rounds—Bowe started 18th in his Holden in the reverse grid race. This onboard video shows a master at work, methodically working his way from the back of the grid to the podium in the span of a short 13-minute race. He exhibits patience and makes smart moves and, you know, the sound and look of the TCM field ain’t bad either: classic Holdens and Ford Falcons abound, but the abundance of Mustangs, Camaros, a Javelin, and a Monza make it for some road racing we can all live with.
