Of all the killer Jim Pace videos we have showed you over the years this may be the first one that truly indicates the amazing characteristics of the vintage McLaren M6B Can Am car that he sometimes finds himself in. This video was taken over Jim’s shoulder as he was stomping the field to dust at the recent SVRA vintage races on the road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Pace is absolutely screaming around the track, passing back markers, and basically putting on a clinic for everyone to watch. For whatever reason, perhaps it is the proximity of the walls, or the course layout, or the camera placement, you really get the sense of how fast he is going and how fast the car actually is.
There’s a moment in this video at about 1:25 that will leave you scratching your head at how fast the car Pace is driving actually accelerates. There’s a slower competitor ahead of Pace and Jim begins to make his move to the inside. The slower car begins to yield the racing line and then Pace squirts by so fast it seems like the other was shot backwards instead of Pace shooting ahead. In the blink of an eye….gone!
You’ll hear the tires working a low speeds and you’ll see Jim running the car as close to flat out as possible on the longer open stretches of the course. Since Jim is our adopted road racing hero here at BS it is only right that we congratulate him and his team for pulling off the race win and looking darned fine while doing it. As an aside, this is the car that was owned and raced by the legendary Oscar Kovelski decades ago. Oscar happened to be at the event and stood in the winner’s circle with JP and all the rest of the team. How flipping awesome is that?!
