The Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) in the United Kingdom hosts a whole ton of classes and their field for the “Future Classics” class includes a whole pile of sports cars from the 1970s and 1980s. If you’re familiar with cheap-car endurance racing here in the United States—24 Hours of LeMons and ChumpCar World Series and so forth—the racing field isn’t too terribly different, albeit in much nicer condition. This video from the CSCC’s recent April 30 and May 1 round at Silverstone Circuit shows some of the interesting ‘80s-built competitors and almost documents some Thatcher-Era Toyota-on-Toyota violence.
Headed into one of Silverstone’s long right-bends, the camera car’s driver, David Bryant, in his SW20 Toyota MR2, is chasing Roger Hayes’ white third-generation Toyota Supra. After some accordion-effect action entering the corner, the MR2 has a good run off the corner on the Supra. As the two drivers leave the corner, Hayes looks to give a bit too much weight to the right pedal as he’s coming off the turn. The Supra’s rear end steps out and the driver suddenly finds himself in an epic tank slapper while the MR2 driver heads for clear air to the right only to find the Supra invading his territory.
If the MR2 driver didn’t need clean undies before that 10 seconds on the track, he’ll surely need ‘em by the time he’s back in his paddock spot. You can also watch the entire race from Bryant’s MR2 right here.
