Ouch! That was our immediate reaction when we saw this Aston Martin road racer smash into a three quarter or one ton Chevy safety truck that had pulled onto the rain-soaked Bell Isle course during the TUDOR series race on Saturday. We’re not sure if the safety truck was out on the racing surface early or if the guy in the Aston Martin didn’t get the memo, but the impact was enough to send the (likely) 3.5-4 ton truck completely off the ground and leave the race car a literal flaming mess.
The clip actually starts with the familiar voice of Bob Varsha (one of the best TV racing guys in the game) calling the collateral damage from the initial shot in the form of a couple cars making gentle contact with the tire barrier while trying to avoid hitting other cars. We’re not sure who was working the booth with Varsha but he makes the comment that points out racers literally cannot go too slow in the conditions they were facing on the track. By the looks of the last guy that nosed ‘er in, he was on slicks and there was ZERO traction for slowing, turning, or accelerating. But back to the point of the story here.
Perhaps the scariest thing about this crash and you have to be watching to see it, is the fact that the back door of the crew cab was opening or OPEN milliseconds before the car smashed into the truck. Whether someone saw it coming or it was the force of the impact in that direction the door slammed shut and thankfully no one shot out of the truck. Had the impact happened in another direction, this may have been a legitimate tragedy. Thankfully it isn’t and we can laugh at the fact that the truck seemed completely nonplussed with the whole thing. After being thrown up in the air it lands and settles down like nothing ever happened. As for the people inside? The individuals inside the truck seem to be alright, but one track safety worker was evaluated and released at a local hospital and another was hospitalized in stable condition, with broken ribs, a collapsed lung and non-operative injuries to his spleen and kidneys, according to IMSA’s Twitter feed.
Having no other video available before and after the crash we’re not sure if the truck was out of the chute early or if the driver did not understand that the truck was out. Obviously the Aston Martin was hauling the mail and got into the wall, precipitating this whole thing but there are always weird circumstances when it comes to cars hitting the safety vehicles.

Bummer for the Aston. The truck can be readily fixed.
BTW – Brian, That’s Belle Isle with an “e” on the end. Having grown up in the Detroit area I know these things!
Dan
That’s Calvin Fish in the booth with Varsha.
