We Drive It: The 2026 Honda HR-V EX-L — The Small SUV With A Passion For Practicality

We have had the opportunity to drive many hundreds of cars here at BangShift over the years and we have approached each one with the same philosophy. Understand the intent of the vehicle, drive it and see how it meets, exceeds, or fails to do what the manufacturer has intended it to do. In the case of the 2026 Honda HR-V, Honda has hit the nail square on the head with the delivery of an efficient, stable, comfortable, and relatively spacious small SUV. It’s not a performance model, it does not have all kinds of gadgetry attached to it and it’s not going to stop traffic with dramatic styling, but it’s not intended to do any of those things. as shocking as it may be for you to read as an automotive enthusiast, not everyone wants that stuff, either. The 2026 Honda HR-V isn’t perfect, no vehicle is, but in our week long experience using it as a normal driver would, we came away with some strong impressions.

For starters, our 2026 Honda HR-V experience took place in the dead of a frigid New England winter. As you can tell by the residual road salt on our tester, things have been pretty dicey around here for the past could have months. This was actually an ideal time to have the HR-V because the hallmark of this model is being convenient, having a high ease of use factor, and frankly being impervious to its surroundings while providing reliable transport. It did all of this in spades. The HR-V rides on the same chassis as the Honda Civic, one of which we recently tested as well. Unlike the Civic which had 200hp with a hybrid system, the HR-V gets the 150hp base Civic engine as its lone power plant of choice. There is no hybrid upgrade here which would have made the driving experience more spirited but the 158

hp engine does a perfectly acceptable job of toting the HR-V around hooked to the CVT transmission. It is not a drag strip hero, but does not come across as underpowered, either.

Small SUV or CUV styling is not known for bold artistic swings and the same is true here. There’s a good use of space to maximize the glass in the windows, providing a more airy feel inside, the black wheel well accents break up the body lines some, and the wheels have enough flair and finish to give the HR-V a more up market feel. This said, the shape of this 2026 Honda HR-V is not very far off the majority of its class competitors, so we can assume that styling is not a main buying decision factor for these vehicles. The interior however, is.

The HR-V shines in the interior department as well it should. Wr had high praise and high marks for the Honda Civic we recently tested and this interior is effectively the same one we experienced in the Civic hatch but with a taller roof, more rear storage space, and some other minor design tweaks in the center console and other subtle areas. For a compact unit, there is ample rear leg room and headroom. Some vehicles in this class tend to plunge the rear roofline downward which can be troublesome for taller passengers, but not the HR-V. The nicely bolstered seats are ready and able to provide hours of comfortable motoring.

The 2026 Honda HR-V that we tested came in at barely over $30,000. Well equipped as it was, the price feels right to us. While our own kids here at BS HQ east are more the old car hot rodder types, many young drivers are being supplied their first car by their folks these days and many people are going the new vehicle route. We can think of few better options for a first car, young driver scenario if you are planning to provide that for them than the HR-V. Stable, simple, rock solid in all respects and priced reasonably while delivering a high level of comfort and technology, the HR-V is also highly rated in the safety department.

CUVs may not elicit the kinds of ohhhhs and ahhh a sports car would but they are the backbone of the new car landscape in 2026. Honda needs to have a good one in order to compete and they sure do. Shop the HR-V after you have driven other options and see just how well it sets itself apart.
