Back during my days as an SCCA racing announcer, I always enjoyed watching Formula Ford because it was one of those glasses that was chock full of interesting cars and talented drivers. There are lots of great drivers that have had some time in the Formula Ford class over the years as it is one of the first places that road racers find themselves in open wheeled equipment. The cars themselves are evenly matched (for the most part) and of course there’s no such thing as a field of evenly matched racing talent so that’s where the fun begins….and where the crazy stuff can really happen.
In this video, the driver is minding his business and running a pretty clean race when there is an accident in front of him. As he checks up you’ll see his car wiggle a little before out of the left side of the screen comes another competitor clear over the top of our hero’s car and missing his head by mere inches! The dude is a bad ass because he simply continues on with only a slight delay to adjust his mirror before he goes hammer down, having picked up a bunch of positions after the mess in front of him and the near death experience over his head.
Watch this video a few times and stop it when the car is flying across the screen to see how close the driver of the camera car was to suffering what would have been some significant head trauma. Even the best helmets in the world are not really designed to sustain a direct hit from a race car. Talk about a once in a lifetime deal. This is one of those.
