My dad worked for Mercedes Benz, Rolls Royce, and Bentley for several years when I was growing up and one issue they often saw was customers coming in for warranty or maintenance work in cars that they had purchased in the United States but that were actually from Europe. These cars were referred to as Grey Market cars and could pose a problem for owners sometimes as they weren’t always easy to get parts for or didn’t fit legal and emissions requirements. But those were cars that were just a couple of years old. What if you could legally import a 25-30 year old European model to the U.S. Would you consider it?
It doesn’t seem like a bad idea to me, especially if you can get a reasonable deal on a car you might not otherwise find stateside.
In the video below, one of the Stanceworks crew does just that and ends up with an E36 BMW station wagon for way better money than he could have purchased one otherwise, and then does a few things to it in order to make it a fun to drive and cool to look at daily driver.
