We’re not wood workers around here but we certainly love seeing the woodworking tools of yesteryear restored. This video shows an 1879 Compass Plane being brought back to life in really nice fashion by the Hand Tool Rescue YouTube channel. The cool part about this plane is that unlike every other plane we have ever seen, this one can be adjusted to bend so you can shave the wood into cool radiused bends and stuff. It draws up in the middle and at the end of the video you will see a perfect demonstration about why that is cool and how the whole thing works.
While we have seen more intricate and almost Rube Goldberg-like tools restored on the channel, it is the “simple stuff” like this that’s really fun to watch. The detail work to get everything perfect as it was in 1879 is what makes this process s fun to watch for us.
A brutally simple machine that is brilliant in its design and execution, a great craftsman brining it back to life, and a fun thing to watch take place on video. It’s a win, win, win! Basically these videos are like Zen meditation to us. Relaxing and satisfying to see this plane get a new lease on life.
