There’s few things that give us as much joy as discovering some sort of weirdo vehicle that we never knew existed before. Such was the case when we found this really weird and really, really neat 1960 Lloyd LT600 van which is for sale at a dealer in Chicago, Illinois. This Lloyd may be one of the only such examples in the United States and apparently similar vans in similar condition have sold for upwards of $50,000! Despite the fact that you want to just automatically call it a British company, Lloyd was a German auto manufacturer which was in business up until the early 1960s. Competing with the likes of VW, Opel, and other companies they fought a losing battle for decades before the cash well ran dry in ’63.
This Lloyd was a barn find and we probably would have squashed the thing if we found it because we’re idiots but someone knew what they were looking at and as such either sold it or consigned it to this specialty car dealer. Talking about the machine itself, we’ll go right to the power stats. 19hp is the number to remember because that’s what this van has. Not 20, not 18, 19 horsepower out of a two cylinder, air cooled mill that resides in the blunt nose of the rig. The transmission is a column shifter four speed, and the power is delivered to the front wheels. The independent rear suspension is as tiny and spindly as you would expect from something this little and European, and the driver’s area is about as well equipped as a Romanian prison and slightly less comfy looking.
There’s lots of patina and some downright rust through areas of the doors, but nothing that looks totally terminal or unable to be fixed. We were impressed with the awesome wood framing on the inside of the body. It looks great and shows that there was some real craftsmanship built into this thing when it rolled out of the Lloyd factory in Germany. We’re not sure how the thing has basically perfect paint on the nose and then the rust and patina everywhere else, but it does. The whole look is pretty interesting. Was the front inside for years and the back was hanging out in the elements? The seller claims that the whole van was in heated barn storage for some time before they got it.
The price right now sits at $8,000 which is about $7,500 more than we would pay for it but the thing does have potential and it would be awesome to jam a modern FWD unit into it with a four banger and a stick. Imagine a Focus ST engine and transmission in this thing all slammed with big rubber at the corners! It would be an ass-kicking super van of epic proportions.

odd little thing–front looks like a cartoon face
A 392 Hemi and a six speed will wake this thing up. And you won’t have to worry about seeing someone driving the exact same thing.
At least there’s room under the hood for a transplant. That engine is miniscule!
It’s a U4 Snud!
God, what an ugly thing.
