This Crew Cab C20 Ex-Cal Trans Truck Is Crew Cab Work Truck Perfection!

A few years ago I said to someone that I thought slamming a service body equipped truck would be kinda cool. This comment was met with multiple shakes of the head, a few expletives, and then arguing. Now it is becoming a thing. To the one who shook his head, you know who you are and you know I was right. Just saying.

At any rate, I have been doing my normal Craigslist scour looking for something cheap and reliable to be my beater truck now that we’ve bought a Suburban so nice I am afraid to haul even new parts in it. And this is one of the trucks I found. Daphne won’t want it parked in the driveway, and I’m a bit short on funds at the moment anyway, but it certainly would be cool to own. I prefer a crew cab dually, unless it has a service body on it like this one, and then I’m down for the single rear wheels.

Because it is a C20, this one has a 350 in it, the aforementioned single rear wheels, and nothing fancy. Because it was once a Cal Trans truck, it has the most awesome shade of orange on it and has probably been abused but service well. It is a unique truck, that will attract only certain buyers, and has been for sale for weeks with an asking price of $1900. I think $1500 takes it home and patience and some haggling might make $1200 the number.

I’d own it for that. Wouldn’t you?

I’d lower it several inches, maybe even do Ridetech Air Ride, and then I’d drive it as is. Maybe add some little things to make it more comfy, like a stereo, and I’d probably add some power and air and other stuff to make it cool at the races and such. Maybe a platform across the top to do live broadcasts from even!

What would you do with it?

Selling my 1987 Chevy Crew Cab 2wd pick up.
350/400 trans

This truck is a former Cal-Trans truck so is well optioned with A/C, heater, defrost, but has manual windows, hard plastic flooring and no other frills. This truck runs great but has been on non-op for a number of years sitting on the side of a house. The fuel pump was recently replaced and there is a wiring issue that I think I have sorted out but just don’t have time to put into the truck right now. I had plans to lower and make a tow rig out of it and will get to it at some point but if you want it more than I do, here it is. There is almost zero rust anywhere on this truck and the body is in descent shape considering. The interior has cleaned up well and can get cleaner with some more effort.
Clean title in hand and like I said the truck is on non op.
Not the most common of trucks to find and swap the bed and you’ll be in business

  1. Crazy

Remove the service bed and install a bucket bed, and now you have a nice adjustable bucket camera stand..
Add a few junkyard rv hyd jacks.. powered by the hydroboost pump and an extra large fuild tank.. and have at it..
