Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should: Cummins Swapped Comet Wagon

Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should: Cummins Swapped Comet Wagon

Wow… On any engine swap, there needs to be some thought. Not just as to whether it CAN be done, but also whether it SHOULD be done. A 2JZ can be, and has been, swapped into a first gen Camaro. But it shouldn’t be. An LS engine will go in almost anything. But that doesn’t mean it should go in everything. And a diesel can go into some cars, but that doesn’t mean you should put a diesel in all of them. The Nomax has a Duramax in it, but nobody would know that if the hood is closed. The outside is just a custom looking Nomad, not something weirdly modified in order to hold it. Case in point, the Mercury Comet wagon right here. The Cummins IS in this car, but it does NOT fit in it. Hence the not cool hood scoop thing to clear the engine.

I really don’t know what else to say without being really negative, and obviously someone thought this was a good idea and is happy with the result. So good on you Comet Cummins Swap Guy, I’d have done a small block Ford and called it a day. Or, an LS if I wanted to piss off some Ford strokes.

Here is all the info from the seller:

Custom 2×3 and 2×4 boxed frame. Narrowed Ford 8.8 rear with 31-spline moser axles. Air ride with dual vaiar compressors. Heavy duty hydraulic lines for air lines, manual ball valves. Mostly stock engine with larger injectors and pump turned up a little. Stock Getrag 5 speed with new clutch. Bare metal covered with satin clear coat.
Runs and drives great but makes a little noise in 5th gear. Call 864-873-7802 or email for more details. Vehicle is located in South Carolina

If you ever put an LS in a Ford you’d be sitting there looking at your poor plums bleeding in your hand. That is the punishment for sacriledge Chad as you DO NOT piss off the followers of The Great Lord Henry!

I don’t know if he was a Nazi, but he definitely was a pervert. According to several documentaries we got the expression “the hot seat”, from his tendency to drive around town picking up young girls, and inappropriately touching them under a blanket.

Still, he was revolutionary, despite his faults.

So someone put a lot of time and effort into this ‘thing”. Now that he wants to sell it .I am afraid he will now see what it is all not worth. If you put something together that is real weird, like some of the real strange rat rods .At sale time you will find out that you will loose your ass .He should separate the engine and trans from the wagon. the 5.9 with the bad 5 spd is worth around 5k. The wagon ,ask Gordie he knows henry things .But all in one piece you might get what the drivetrain is worth .That’s just what I think.

Nothing a LS3 and a flat hood wouldn’t cure, probably do for what the current drivetrain is worth, right Geordie

I’m confused. I’ve seen a lot of really worthless crap get all kinds of positive attention by hot rodders over the years. I don’t see what the problem is with you and this car. It’s not my cup of tea, but neither are Comet wagons in general (unless it was Don Nicholson’s). It’s a hot rod, of sorts, the guy built it his way. The workmanship far exceeds any rat rod I’ve ever seen.

Honestly, if someone went to all the effort and they love the car, I say good for them.

I’m pretty sure Dan Stokes would approve.

It looks to me like land speed racer meets traditional hot rod. Land speed racers are famous for “thinking out of the box”, but it appears to have the fit and finish of a well executed hot rod. Just needs some refinement on the hood.

Not the most successful swap, but far from the worst. There was a Cummins powered Miata out there that really didn’t look like it could do anything well, except serving as a “just to prove we can do it” sort of car.

The goal sometimes seems to be: Do the swap that nobody else done yet.

I say do it! See what happens; unexpected sound and performances; And sometimes a smashing result. There are no failed experiments

    FUN!!!
