There is a lot going on with this 1966 GMC Suburban. It’s stretched so that it has two sets of full size doors on each side. It has stepside fenders grafted on to the outside of the stock Suburban quarter panels. It even has bigger GMC 4000 series front fenders bolted on. But that’s the obvious and easy stuff. What’s really cool is the fact that this particular 1966 GMC Suburban, with the aforementioned body mods, has been mounted to a 1997 Ford Bluebird Bus frame. That means 5.9 Cummins power with an Allison behind it, along with incredibly heavy duty EVERYTHING underneath. But to fit all of it right requires a little “massaging”. If you look closely you’ll see that the center of the grill has been cut out and moved forward. Great inserts have been built to transition from the sides to the popped out center though, so this is going to look cool when finished. Of course the same treatment had to happen to the hood, and again it is done right so this looks like something Chevrolet might have done. I’m in love with the look. And big thanks to Mike Powers for another great find!
There is still a lot of work to do on this particular project, but it appears that the fabrication work done so far is pretty good. It is going to need some of the exterior patched and finished, along with regular paint and bodywork if you want it to be pretty. We wouldn’t. And it needs all the floors and interior done. Again, we’d go simple and call it done. I’d want to lower it just a little, or else go full tilt and run some big nasty super singles on it and let it be giant. I’d have to think about it. But overall I love it, and I think it would be a riot to drive and tow your travel trailer or toy hauler with. It’s bitchin.
This is all the info the seller has provided:
Hot damn!
The good ol’ boys have been watching chop shop!
But this also has a strange alure – I’d love to turn up in it at the school run in a posh suburban area in the UK and park it next to all the high-end Range Rovers whilst playing Ministry at ear-splitting volume just to see the reaction.
“I only kill to prove I’m alive” indeed….
All it needs is stacked quad headlights and a tube grille, ala the ‘van scene’. In the era of it’s ‘just another boring diesel or LS implant’, this thing would really shine with that V-12 for sale on fee-bay
You had me at Cummins! I love it. Chip Foose should pick it up and give her the finish she deserves.
Hell it’s even got the column shifter too. I’ve seen quite a few of those. Although I’ve also seen some with the t-handle shifter as well. I like the one’s with the column though. Makes it feel a little more old school.
Looks like late model GMC headlights wil fit. I love this thing
It’s 2WD. Not so cool. Has to be a 4×4 to have that much altitude off the ground & still be cool. Love the Cummins. Because it was a kiddie hauler, it’ll be the low, low end Cummins. Great idea, but not executed too well. Allison? Great, as long as you don’t have to fix it. If you do it’s $$$$$.
If it was on a 4×4 chassis & not a not-so-cool bus, then it’d be Bob your Uncle.
Hack hack that grill hack and 2WD? No thanks
I like the looks of the front! Looks like current late model GM trucks!! I would ditch that bus business altogether and put a GM 4×4 drive train underneath. It wouldn’t be that high off the ground either. Otherwise, great overall idea for the truck!
