WTF? Is This Shortened C10 As Weird To You As It Is To Us? Long Bed Wheelbase, Short Bed Length

People do weird things to perfectly good vehicles, and this is one prime example. We aren’t going to fully throw the seller of this thing under the bus, because to each his own, but we are going to share pictures of one of the strangest looking C10 Chevy pickups we’ve seen. The person responsible thought that having the wheelbase of a long bed truck was better than the short bed wheelbase, but that they wanted the overall length of a short bed truck. So it looks all wrong. The proportions are screwy for sure after removing 17 inches from the back of the bed.

Like we said, weird.

What do you think?

I’ve seen this trick when making a wrecker out of a pickup. Less leverage behind the rear axle, less lift on the steer axle. This one looks like a half ton, so it’s not likely to be one of those. It could be one of the guys who think removing the door handles and Bondo-izing the back doors make a four door into a two door.

Yup, that’s not at all attractive…..if it was a 4×4 they might be able to “Rationalize” it by saying “Yah, but that approach angle”….but on a 2WD, it’s just being lazy and not wanting to deal with both chassis mods & bodywork.
If the length is taken from in front of the wheels by shortening the wheelbase of the chassis & the corresponding amount from the box ahead of the wheels, it looks much better, as witnessed on Hot Rod Garage’s “Crown Hick” ’66 F100. They dropped the tin onto a Crown Vic Chassis, and shortened the box in front of the axle, and although that is not how you would do it if you were shortening a LWB ’64-’66 Ford styleside box to go on an OEM SWB chassis (which requires shortening both ends), it still looks good to me!

Dear everyone: STOP SHORTENING LONG BOX TRUCKS.

So stupid. A truck needs a proper box on it to look right and to be actually usable. And nevermind this abomination.

    I\’d say there\’s a method to the owner\’s madness…longer wheelbase makes for a
better ride (especially empty)…a load\’s weight is better distributed between front
and rear axles…and towing a trailer won\’t be quite the exercise in nervous tension (no tail wagging the dog).

I will be as gentle with my comments. I really don\’t think you should mess with the original look on these classic trucks. But to each his own.Just think you should make up your mind.Long bed or short.Don\’t try to blend the two.But this comes from a guy who is old school to the core.

Function wise: it would tow like a long bed, but has 17 inches less between the trailer and the back end. Would back up better (like a Wrecker)If it’s a Rear Control arm truck, moving all that stuff to make a short bed is too dang much work. So you get the odd ball look. It works… but.. that butt is ugly.

What I hate: id-TEN-t’s that want to make every truck a stupid bed.. I mean short bed. I knew some guys that would make Short box Duallys out of 64 cab to axle wreckers. They would pull the wrecker beds for 88-98 Chevy trucks (that would get the most recent grill and head lights, that was when those trucks were new-ish).

What I would Do: Find a Rotted out K5 from 69-72. I’d use the upper windshield frame, brace the cab wall. Make it a removable top. I’d also do frame surgery to make the front of the frame hang leaf springs. Then find a Dana 44 front and a dana 60 rear doff. Then get Re-angle the rear control arm mounts. Might have to do pig and axle tube surgery on the rear 60 to make it work.

Might even see if I could use a later Ford F-350 Front Dana 60 with control arms and coil springs. That would be awesome on the trails. Plus it would ride good on the road with some 35 to 37 inch tires.

yes with enough money and some helpers I can shake the fail out of most projects.

I have a 82 c10 two wheel drive with 31 inch tires and it\’s a beast any ideas to improve the truck

I see something like this as a practical towing rig; especially with a gooseneck, that rear axle is nice and close.
Plus, with the longer wheelbase, you have plenty of room for a range box or second transmission for lots of gears.
With the right engine, transmission, and gearing, this would make a great tow rig.

I agree with some of the comments, on it being a smoother ride because of the longer wheel base especially with out a load, and better for towing and backing up, in my opinion great tow rig with a good amd.different look .

I don’t know, I kind of like it. All it needs is a pull behind trailer made out of the same style short bed done up with the same finish and wheels.

It’s a neat nod to the past. Back in those days, bias was the only choice and you really haven’t lived until you were driving a truck towing a heavy load where the back tires were trying to decide which rut was best. That mod solved (mostly) that problem. It’s certainly not something you need to do now, but it’s cool to see the nod to the ingenuity of our forefathers…. get er done, you only look silly if you don’t.
