Legends: Interview With Baja Royalty, Malcolm Smith, Winner Of The 1st Baja 1000

In 1967 Malcolm Smith heard about a race that would run all the way down the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, and was just crazy enough to think it was a great idea. If that was the only great thing he ever did, it would arguably be enough, but when he went, raced, and won that first Baja 1000, we’re pretty sure he had no idea just how big his career would be. With 5 more Baja 1000 wins, splitting his 6 evenly between cars and bikes, Malcolm is a certifiable Baja Legend.

In this interview he talks about how his wife is a private pilot and that they fly over Baja in search of new trails, new roads, and new fun all the time. We’re jealous, if for no other reason than the fact that running Baja is a true dream of mine.

“On Any Sunday” made him a hero to all kinds of kids my age…amazing to hear him still, acting like everything is so casual…
