(By Tom Lohnes) – GM trucks have been on a comeback recently. With the half-ton trucks getting a massive refresh with a completely overhauled interior and exterior, and the addition of the all-new Hummer EV, General Motors is getting their game back together with their rigs. The smaller trucks are great now, but the heavier-duty models are definitely in need of some love. Sure, the Duramax trucks can tow the most out of any pickups right now, but the questionable styling and plastic fantastic interior really isn’t helping attract buyers. Well, GM has a plan for that, and it arrives next year.
Essentially getting the same refresh as the half-ton trucks got, the 2500 and 3500 Chevrolet ands GMC trucks will be getting a drastic facelift, which is a much-needed one. With the Chevy’s upside-down face and the GMCs absolutely gaping grille, the two trucks aren’t really lookers. Hopefully a little nip-and-tuck will do the job. Inside, the 2024 model-year GM trucks will be getting similar updates to the smaller trucks, with a new digital gauge cluster and massive infotainment screens on higher trims. Rumor says that a modified version of SuperCruise tuned towards towing might be available as well.
Although the cosmetic refresh is definitely a good one, larger truck buyers basically only care about one thing: The engine. Well, that is also great news for the GM faithful. As a gas motor, Chevy and GMC are keeping the same massive 6.6L V8 with around 400 horsepower, but a much better 10-speed auto will be replacing the clunky 6-speed. But, you don’t buy a huge truck for the gas engine, you buy it for the diesel. And GM knows that, which is why they’re making their Duramax diesel even more of a powerhouse.
According to rumors, the all-new Duramax engine will be bored out to a massive 7.0 Liters, and will produce over 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Also, a horsepower number of 500 or more may be under the 2024 HD truck’s hood. That seems ridiculous in that large of a vehicle, and well it is. But, the more the merrier. Also good news, the extremely strong 10-speed Allison automatic is staying.
Overall, the 2024 GM HD trucks will be a very exciting update to some trucks that are lacking big time right now. Stay tuned for more details, as the refresh will debut sometime next summer.
My father-in-law just ordered a new 3/4 ton Chevy. was told it will be built in early May
Yeah, 2023.
I’m glad they came out with the regular cab shot box truck but wish they would offer it in the higher trim level. It’s the same as before the foreign counties can get them but we can.t
I just hope the hideous front end is done, I don’t know who they we’re trying to impress but talk about trying to hard, nailed it!
And with stupid prices I’ll keep driving my reliable 02 extended cab that has been paid off for 15 years. Some of the new amenities are nice but I can’t think of a dumber way to waste money than buying a new vehicle.
YeeHaaa!!!
Break out the UGLY STICK!!!!!
