This 1951 Van Pelt Power Wagon Fire Truck Is One Of Five Ever Made And Totally Awesome

I’m on a big old truck kick today, hopefully that’s cool with you. After seeing the Mercedes in action I bounced over to one of my favorite YouTube channels, OCDResto. This dude does amazing restorations on trucks, cars, and particularly vintage fire trucks. He specializes in really rare 4×4 jobs from the 1950s and 1960s. In this case he is showing off a 1951 Van Pelt Power Wagon fire truck that he recently finished putting back into perfect condition. The open cab truck is one of five that the Van Pelt company ever built and according to Mark at OCD resto, one of the most expensive that they ever produced.

The most unique feature on this truck is the large fixed hose that arcs its way across the front of the truck from one side to the other. It looks like a cool battering ram of some sort. The rig has a PTO winch and about five levers coming through the floor that operate various things, change gears, engage axles, and who knows whatever else. Dual hose reels are also part of the package and every inch of this truck is pretty much dripping with awesomeness.

The truck lived a long life at a California fire dept and then was put into private service. Fire trucks lead strange lives. They are among the most pampered vehicles in the world because of the level of care they get but when pressed into service they hurtle into treacherous situations where they can be damaged at any time.

This thing rules.

OCD Resto must be deaf, ’cause the audio sucks rocks. Sad to say, I’d rather listen to an endless loop of Finnegan’s Garage than suffer through that again. Nice resto work, though.
