While the racing at Dakar is awesome, the logistics of the race are arguably even more amazing. I say this because teams must have support vehicles, support staff, food, etc follow them through the desert. Think about it, you have dozens of race teams who need tire changes, repairs, maintenance, etc and that means people, tools, and equipment. And all those things have to be setup somewhere that is going to be safe, secure, and accessible to these teams, racers, and the event staff themselves. It’s a monumental task to put on a race like this and that means a ton of infrastructure.
During the race coverage we see the pit areas sometimes, but I’ve never seen anyone actually address where people stay and sleep in camp. Many of those shots have folks in tents scattered all around buildings, but there also appear to be some off-road expedition style RVs.
In this video from Redbull we’ll see what the accommodations are like. Check it out.
