Ford And Chevrolet Trade Barbs and Blows In These 1987 Commercials – Gold!

Ford And Chevrolet Trade Barbs and Blows In These 1987 Commercials – Gold!

(By Jason Mazzotta) – Rivalries are a part of everyone’s life; Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees in the MLB, Auburn vs. Alabama in college football, North Carolina vs. Duke in college basketball, Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Coke vs. Pepsi, and Chocolate vs. Vanilla in the ice cream world; but one of the biggest rivalries in the automobile world is Chevy vs Ford, or then for some, Ford vs. Chevy which is a battle that has been going on for decades, and the two commercials in this video are prime examples of the two battling it out with haymakers.

The year was 1987 and I was, well just born, but the battle over the top truck in America was as great as ever, and in the first thirty seconds of the video you see the Ford commercial, where a nice new “aero-dynamic” ’87 F-250 is not only climbing a mountain with a Chevy in its bed, but also pulling a few more trucks including a Dodge and GMC. But when Chevy got a glimpse of this commercial, they were not going down without a fight, and the second thirty seconds of this video is Chevy’s rebuttal for Ford and a comeback for the ages.

(Editor’s note: I think the best thing between the two ads is the quick line in the first Ford commercial that touts Ford having “the biggest engine available”. In today’s world no manufacturer would be caught dead making that claim. It is all about more power from less inches these days but in 1987 you could still get people’s attention on cubic inch displacement…even if the “advantage” was a mere 6ci. This is great stuff!)
