Diesel Power Challenge Week: The Punishing Eighth Mile Trailer Sprint At Bandimere

Diesel Power Challenge Week: The Punishing Eighth Mile Trailer Sprint At Bandimere

This is the most brutally simple event at the Diesel Power Challenge. The idea is to take a skid steer and trailer combo weighing in at about 11,000lbs and drag them as quickly as possible down an eighth mile course, in this case, half the length of Bandimere Speedway in Colorado. The “fun” in this event is at the launch. How do you get the truck off the starting line without breaking it, without blowing the tires off, or without bogging the crap out of it? How do you keep control of the trailer when you are applying 2,000 lb/ft of torque to the ground and the truck is trying to saw the wheels out of your hand?

By this time in the competition, we had already lost a couple competitors to breakage so the field was starting to shrink. We were wondering if it would continue to shrink as it did last year when the events became more and more violent and taxing to the trucks. This is like a race horse trying to circle the track with a skid filled with concrete block behind it. Before this event, some of the trucks had never even towed a go-kart before!

    That poor hitch!

I hate it when a truck pulling a trailer beats me down the on-ramp!
