When we talk about old Army trucks normally visions of Power Wagons and other iconic stuff like that will pop into our heads. Today we’re stepping up the brawn program by showing you an awesome 1942 Autocar U-7144-T rig that was one of more than 11,000 made by the company for the war effort. This truck is powered by a 526i Hercules RXC engine that was rated for a blazing 131.5hp (you gotta have the .5) and just shy of 400 lb/ft of torque. It has the interior appeal of a Turkish prison, and the ride is likely about as soft as a rockslide. That being said we’re kind of in love with the thing because of its snub nosed look, the canvas top, and the 25ft trailer that comes with the rig that is all weather beaten and awesome.
We have seen spartan cabs before but this takes it to a completely new level. The seat is kind of a steel shelf and the shifters look like they could be used as weapons themselves in the event of an emergency. Top speed is not spoken about but we’d be shocked if it is much more than 50 mph. With the dearth of horsepower (although a pretty respectable torque number) it would need lots of gearing to get rolling with a load on its back. The truck has a 10-speed transmission and Timken axles under it. A similar but slightly different version of the rig was built by the Federal Motor Truck Company and called the 94×43. A little later there was a six ton version of this truck released, this one is a four tonner.
Having an old army truck is cool but having one that is a cab and trailer setup like this? that’s totally the jam. Slow, uncomfortable, impractical, terrible on fuel, YES PLEASE.
