eBay Find: Bobbed Deuce And A Half + 1970 Chevy Truck = Tough Job With Stunning Results

The only crappy part about owning this truck is that people will just look at it and assume all the builder did was to somehow jam a Chevy body onto a frame from an M35A deuce and a half army truck, when the story is so much more involved than that. This is not a slap-dash, backwoods, duct tape and chewing gum build. This truck is a well executed monster with underpinnings that are virtually unbreakable, a drivetrain that is stout enough to make it boogie, and looks that could stop a passing circus parade. The best of all worlds, outside of any world that involves fuel economy of course.

So the bottom of this truck started out as an M35A military deuce and a half truck. That machine was bobbed, massive wheels and tires that are supposed to be on MRAP combat vehicles were added to help give the 6.72 geared Rockwell axles a little more leg, a big block Chevy engine was added in place of the stock 130hp whistler diesel and that engine was bolted to a 5-speed transmission from a heavy duty Chevy truck. Behind the transmission, the stock two speed transfer case still lives and that has been modified away from the normal air shifted method of selecting range to a simple mechanical lever to perform that operation.

Perhaps the coolest part of the truck is the power steering and power brakes which were created by using parts off of an International truck so this thing has real power steering and hydraulically assisted brakes. That has to make driving it a lot more pleasurable, especially at low speeds where Armstrong steering would have ruled the day. The “ride quality” is probably about the same as your standard issue army truck but at least the factory bench seat would be more comfortable than the army version. The actual truck body was blown apart, rust was fixed, and it was professionally painted. This is a fantastic truck and it is mighty impressive to see and read about how much thought and work actually went into building it.

There are some things to consider before buying a truck like this. The first is the sale of things. The wheel/tire combo weighs 500lbs per corner and there’s virtually no way to haul a spare. That being said, if you manage to pop one of these you have done something truly heroic, so keep a camera nearby. The truck has a top speed of 55mph which isn’t going to get any better unless you add a divorced Gear Vendors unit or something. The fuel economy has to be spectacularly bad, but it isn’t like cross country drives are on the docket. Off road, we’re betting that the big truck does not have much in the way of articulation and on-road, you’ll probably run over like 10 eco-lame car in the first day but that is why you have insurance.

We think that this truck is all time!
