I’ve shared my opinion of Evel Knievel many times here on the pages of BangShift. He was an insanely courageous man certainly no one that will ever be considered for sainthood. All that aside, the guy knew how to travel in style and his personality and persona would not allow for anything but the biggest and best in the business. He was famous for his transport trucks, which were really his home on the road. That becomes doubly important when you realize that the dude lived on the road for most of his life. His first mega-truck was a Kenworth and the second truck, a Mack, is the one you see in this old video. The 1975 Mack truck was a one-off custom piece built to receive the massive “living quarters” that formerly lived on the back of the KW.
The video shows the truck as a cab and chassis and you really get a sense of how long the whole works is. With the trailer that was also attached to this rig, the truck was so long that special permitting was required for it to travel through some states without being fined by the DOT for being over weight/over length. It was a personification of the guy on wheels. So big and over the top you had no option other than to notice and gawk at it on the way by. All of this is well and good but we haven’t mentioned the absolute coolest thing about this truck….the interior of the cab.
Check this out! The “photo” to the left is actually a screen capture from the video but we dug this angle over the others because you can see the amazing flag/Knievel themed look of the driver’s area. From the blue ceiling with the stars to the red and white striping on the corners of the cab and the seats, we can guarantee you that Mack has never done a more crazy (and labor intensive) cab interior since this truck left the building.
As you may or may not know, this actual truck was located and has been restored to the insane glory you see here
The show American Trucker followed the location of the rig and its transport to the shop that was taking on the job. At the time, the truck was largely intact but needed a LOT of work. The good news is that the bones were all there and a team of talented wrenches and craftsmen are going to get the thing back into the shape it was in when Evel was calling it home for more of the year.
