Talk to people on the eastern seaboard about the Blizzard of ’78 and they will talk about the huge storm that came up the coast and wrought havoc on every city it dumped snow on. Believe it or not, the “Blizzard of ’78” means something totally different to the people who live in the Ohio Valley because they had their own mondo storm that year and in many ways it was even worse than the one that hit New England! There wasn’t flooding, but lots of places, like southern Wisconsin that got hit with more than three feet of the white stuff during that storm.
As you’ll see in this video, things were largely the same back then as they are today with respect to gearheads. Instead of cowering in their homes, these guys went out and had a blast! The video shows a group of buddies in (for their time) big lifted trucks. There’s a couple of 1970s “dent side” Fords, a Chevy, a GMC, and our favorite, a lifted Suburban. Most of the trucks seem to be wearing the every popular white “wagon” wheels and they’re all bumped up a little in ride height and stuff. The big ‘Burban even appears to have a winch hanging off the front of it.
These guys were out playing in some decently deep powder and it is a lot of fun to watch the trucks power through it. There’s no sound as this was shot on an 8mm camera but the heavy metal guitar background is OK. It beats silence anyway. It looks to us like the guys are in a farmer’s field of some sort. Could the things jutting up through the snow be old corn stalks or something? There’s a highway in the background that seems to be moving OK, but these guys are not worries about traffic. A couple of the trucks are shown digging themselves in at times and then being yanked out. The big Ford is all but unstoppable and the lifted Suburban is absolutely friggin’ awesome. Even cooler is that the owner is restoring it and there are videos showing that process that you can link to.
I am chief dork in charge when it comes to trucks like those in the video. My favorite era, bar none. Like Jim’s 1978 Dodge Power Wagon that we featured a while back, the trucks are cool because everything is “just enough”. The lift is just enough, the tire size is just enough, etc. Not over the top, but functional and cool. I’m in love!

That music is killer! It sounds like Fireball Ministry, is it? Great video too!
