KTPA Pulling Action: Hot Farm Tractors and Pro Stock 4WD Trucks!

KTPA Pulling Action: Hot Farm Tractors and Pro Stock 4WD Trucks!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Putting on an event that moves along as this one did takes a lot of work and that force of labor is mainly consists of volunteers.  To have shows like this survive and thrive takes commitment of people, support from the local community, and the dedication of the competitors.  I’ve seen venues come and go.  There’s been events wither and fade away.  There are numerous issues and obstacles to overcome.  Those shows that continue don’t’ succeed in a vacuum.  To all those who keep motorsports going for the rest of us to enjoy – thank you very much.

In this article we have the 10,000lb Hot Farm tractors to start things off.  These are required to use OEM block, heads, etc and are limited to 470ci sporting a single turbo compressing a charge of air and diesel only.  No alky allowed in there.  The tires have to be uncut so those big lugs work the engines hard.  And they have one other big limitation – no revs over 3,000RPM.  It takes a fine line to keep these things off the limiter for consistent power.  These are big, heavy, powerful tractors that can really yank that sled around.

Next up are the Pro Stock four=wheel-drive trucks.  These are supposedly the next tier up from the Super Stock trucks that are limited to DOTs and 470ci cast-iron long-blocks.  The Pro Stockers can have 485ci, which doesn’t seem like much of an advantage using a cast-iron block, but heads a pretty wide open and these guys can use cut tires.  One competitor in this class was also a competitor in Friday night’s Super Stock class.  They returned Saturday with cut tires installed to have a 1st-time-try at competing with 15-fewer cubic-inches and iron heads.  The Overkill Ford sends its mill into RPM seldom seen by mortals.  It was first up to hook this class and after its maiden voyage in this class officials decided they needed to add weight to the sled.  So Overkill sits back – the obvious underdog – and waits to tug the sled last.  Most wouldn’t have given it much of a chance having seen the rest of the class steam up the track.  When the dust finally cleared the Overkill truck bested them all by 12ft.  On paper it looks like it was an exercise in futility, but in all forms of motorsport the least-likely can often find a way to come home with a win.  Good show.
