When your diesel engine has several staircases attached to it so that all areas of the engine can be accessed, you have a huge engine and this one was at one time the world’s largest, from it’s creation in 1932 until the early 1960s. This is the MAN DM 884WS-150, a two-stroke eight-cylinder diesel unit that makes 22,500hp. To be honest, finding information on this gigantic engine was difficult, but here’s what is known: this beast is started once a week just to make sure it’s still operational, as Denmark has this engine in backup to stabilize the national power grid should something happen. You know…just because. This is the kind of engine meant to power a ship across the ocean, or to power some mad scientist’s lab. And suddenly, I picture Lohnes running up and down the staircases in a lab coat, laughing manically….
If anyone has any more information on this engine, share with us!
Anyone else think it needs a turbo about the size of my bedroom slapped on it?
looks like its already got some type of roots blowers on the side
Stick the drive shaft in the ground and the sun will rise in the west tomorrow morning.
Are the rules ready for DW 2015? Hmmm…
Here hold my beer while I spray some starting fluid in there… 😀
If I ever visit Denmark this has to be on the itinerary
Hello, Autozone? Yeah, I need a starter for a 1932…
NO.
Hope you find more information about this monster–crazy
Probably only needs 5 (55 gallon drums) of oil for an oil change.
If this thing were to ever get into a runaway condition, I’d suggest fleeing the building…quickly…and running…out of Denmark.
This type of engine is two cycle double acting. The cyl fires every time in each direction.
