So there I was, aimlessly searching the internet for Unimogs because that’s what I do. Lo and behold, I stumble upon not one, but TWO of the fantastic German built machines and each one is equipped with some really neato hardware. The first one that stole my gaze was the yellow 1980 model below that is equipped with a massive and completely deadly looking Schmidt S-series snow blower. This truck has been used gently for years to clear the snow off of a small airport in Wisconsin. While the truck dates from the year of the miracle on ice, the snowblower dates from 1993.
Calling the thing hanging off the front of this truck a snowblower is akin to calling a howitzer a “gun”. We’re pretty sure that you could feed logs, cars, small boats, rocks, and any other substance known to man into this baby and it would be ground, chopped, and shot into low Earth orbit. We can only imagine the racket that the unit makes when it is spinning at full tilt. Now that I have loved up on that thing in a nearly obscene manner, you need to scroll down to see photos of it and get to the second option in this manly “Would You Rather” –

…and in this corner stands a proud 1989 Unimog equipped with a three quarter yard bucket on the front and a full-tilt boogie backhoe unit hanging off the tail. This is an SSE (small emplacement excavator) styled Unimog and it was actually constructed by Freightliner trucks for Mercedes-Benz. It is tough to come up with appropriate words without inserting lots of excited swears and colorful language to describe the greatness of this rig. In terms of something being a literal Swiss Army Knife on wheels it is impossible to beat this truck. It’ll dig trenches and then load the excavated Earth into a dump truck. It’ll hustle down the road at near highway speeds. It’ll drive through and or/destroy virtually anything in its path, and it looks like something straight out of the movies, but is 100% real.
So there you have it. Scroll down to see the photos of this rig and then tell us below….which of these trucks would you rather own?

One of each, with a side of chili fries!
I’d take the excavator – not enough changes to use the snowblower in Georgia.
Specially in South Georgia.
The Unimog is a capable vehicle but I’d rather have the 6×6 at the top of the page.
Personally the snowblower would be more useful to me here in Canada haha, winters get pretty hairy
I NEED the Swiss army version.. besides, with that bucket, it will clear snow too 🙂
I could really use the bucket and backhoe model here deep in the woods of North Carolina!
The Army got rid of the SEEs because they flip over at will, the German’s still use them of course. The funny thing is we would spend all day digging fox holes to standard with E-Tools and then when the training is over the Engineers bring the SEE trucks and fill them in. Why don’t they dig them for us? Cause God loves the Infantry that’s why.
