Well, we can officially feel our toes again, we’re missing the sounds of 8,500rpm small blocks, and there isn’t a ski bunny in sight. This means that Red Bull Frozen Rush 2015 has drawn to a close but not before a spectacular day of competition at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine. We’ll come right out and say that Red Bull Frozen Rush was the most unique and fun motorsports event we have ever covered. It drew a massive crowd on Friday when the racing took place, the competition package was tight and entertaining, and the actual head to head races were great. The event was contested on a ladder style format meaning that two trucks would race each other and the winner would advance, the loser parked.
The Red Bull crew had to have loved the way the weekend played out. The two trucks carrying their logo and livery on the sides were driven by up and coming start Bryce Menzies. The other is driven by Ricky Johnson who’s a guy that needs ZERO introduction in this setting. Menzies and Johnson qualified on different sides of the ladder so right from the get-go there was a possibility of an all Red Bull final. Last year, Menzies and Johnson traded blows in the semi-finals with Johnson winning in that round and the next one. This year it worked out like they wanted it with 2014’s champ and Menzies sitting side by side on the line in the finals. Menzies got the job done on a course that was thoroughly shredded by the awesome spikes BFG tires that all the competitors ran. It was amazing to watch the actual makeup of the course change during the event. The place transformed from a beautifully groomed and frigid ice course to shredded powder that meant the drivers had to alter their approach and style for every round. In short, the whole thing was great.
Here’s a collection of photos that I shot during the racing on Friday. Being that we were restricted on locations to shoot from, I did the best I could. We have some amazing photos coming from Nutting tomorrow and as usual, he makes my junk look like, well, junk. Stay tuned, more coverage is on the way!
