For the second time in as many years, BangShift will be bringing you awesome coverage of Red Bull Frozen Rush at the Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine. If you missed our wall to wall fun last year, this is a one-off event where Pro 4 trucks are placed on a course made of snow and raced like they are stolen. Seriously, this is some of the most hardcore, hammer down, intense action we see all year and it happens well below freezing. The trucks are 900hp four wheel drives and they spend about as much time on the ground as they do in the air. Normally they are raced on short course tracks made of dirt and mud but since that season is over, Ricky Johnson and Red Bull schemed up this idea a few years ago and it has become something of a sensation. Between the dramatic surroundings of a ski mountain and the scream of the 900hp V8s, there’s nothing like it.
Last year, Dave Nutting and I stood in temperatures that were well below zero taking photos and covering the event as long as our camera batteries would allow. It was historic in some sense because at the close of the madness, Ricky Johnson announced that he wold be retiring from racing trucks at the close of the 2015 season. Big time stuff and it was pretty emotional to hear him break the news. Bryce Menzies won the whole shooting match last year but he’s got some the best guys in the world gunning for him in 2016.
The coverage team will be Bryan McTaggart and me for 2016. We’re also going to be horsing around with the guys and girls from BF Goodrich during the week so we’ll have some great photos from a four wheeling adventure and whatever madness we can conjure up in the small and otherwise sleepy town of Newry.
