Junkyards are the places where so many hot rod dreams start. They are also the places where the end of many hot rod dreams land. No matter where you are from of what you are into, a ‘yard is a fun place to hang out and gawk at stuff. In California and other dry western states, it is also a place where you can find complete cars for restoration or for major parts you need for your project. This episode of Roadkill backs us up on that claim because we see the boys walk into a wrecking yard in Fresno, California, select a 1950 GMC truck, and make it (largley) roadworthy again with the intention of driving it home.
The truck had been last on the road in the 1980s and neither David or Mike knew exactly why it had been essentially sold for scrap. Outwardly, it was just a weathered truck that had stood the test of time in the desert. You’ll see that when they start wrenching on it, the normal signs of old age pop up. The brakes are shot, the cooling system is empty, and the interior has largely evaporated. Systematically they work through the issues using mostly the junk they are surrounded with. How do they do? Does the truck actually leave under its own power? Are they able to drive the pickup right back home? Watch and find out!

Man, after seeing this episode, I would love to find one of these trucks and build it up like Fred Willams’ Dumpster build.
Hope they got a tetanus shot. That Valiant looked pretty good, and the Firebird but they don’t like Pontiacs?
Loved the episode. Wish I lived in a place with yards like this.
wish i could find a yard that would let me do that.
Down here in NC, they have plenty of U-pull-it yards but building one there, that would be interesting!
As lifelong gearhead, as well as a lifelong magazine subscriber, this is the type stuff I F’ing love. I’m just a middle class dad, who is more likely scraping his knuckles in a junkyard than calling up Rad Rides by Troy to have them build me a Riddler contender.
