(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – We hadn’t attended a pull in a good while and after making some contacts we secured blessings from the event organizers to shoot some video and pictures from behind the concrete barriers at trackside. This is typically the optimal location to catch the action and we were not disappointed with the view.
The local FFA Alumni hosts a couple of events a year sanctioned by the KTPA and uses the revenue for scholarship funds. KTPA runs a good program and Friday night’s action started a bit late, but moved along very quick. First class to take the hook were the Economy Hot Rod tractors. These have a 5,200lb limit, need no more than 600ci, have one carb, and use a tire no larger than 18.4×38. There are more details to it, but that’s it in a nutshell. I’d say most run a BBC, but the similarity stops there. The cosmetics are pretty much wide open and folks take advantage of that to ‘brew their own’ version of the ultimate in class.
Next up are the Limited, Light, Super Tractors. This I hadn’t heard of before (or at least didn’t remember it). There are various limits for each allowed combination, but the most-used recipe is to run alcohol with no intercooler. One diesel made the hook and did well. These are only 4 and 6-cylinders with OEM heads that weigh a max of 6000lb. They put on pretty awesome shows and wail the turbo song with the best of ‘em. Lastly there were a couple triple-engine modifieds to take a test hook for an upcoming event. We got photos of the first one, but the second machine showed up late and I gacked the photos both times it made a pass. My son managed to get video and that stuff is up on youtube.
