This is one of those times when I’ve fallen so immediately in love with something that I am virtually blinded to the sheer horror of the situation until I take a second look and realize how messed up the object of my desire actually is. First off, could you blame me for being all gaga over the fact that there is a really rare old Dodge cab over wrecker for sale on eBay? Having seen about three of these trucks in my entire life and none of them having been wreckers, it was a moment. I envisioned myself cruising down the road with the little flathead six burbling away, my gleaming, restored Holmes wrecker on the back of the truck ready for work, waving to kids as I passed by, just a dream sequence. Then reality hit.
There is very little left of this truck that can be saved son whoever buys it will either be picking it over for parts (likely the wrecker unit) or it is someone who has an absolute and true passion for old trucks and preserving history. It will also be a person with an immense wallet because whatever you cannot find for replacement parts you will be fabricating from scratch and we’re talking stuff like the hood here people.
One of the wheels was so rotted the freaking center section of it fell out! That’s real rust we’re talking about. None of this pansy surface patina people out west get. No, we’re talking 50 years in Maine kind of rust where the thing is literally making noises as you look at and the tin worm munches away.
Despite all of these issues, why am I loving the truck? Firstly the overall proportions and shape of the rig is very nice. The axle being at the extreme rear of the body on one end and the same on the other looks pretty neat. The twin boom Holmes wrecker unit is really cool, and lastly, it is a complete truck. Here’s hoping someone has the same sickness as me and more money or talent. Save this truck!
