There’s a bridge in Durham, North Carolina that has been supporting rail road traffic for more than 10o years. The bridge has also withstood hundreds and hundreds of hits from box trucks, campers, and big rigs that haven’t paid attention to the fact that it only has 11’8″ of clearance under it for them to get through. The problem is that lots of box trucks stand 12′ or higher, many campers have roof top AC units, antennas, and other stuff, and most big rig trailers are in the neighborhood of 13′ in height. All of this means that you are going to see a video of trucks getting scalped, campers losing whatever is on the roof, and drivers being forced to make a really, really crappy call to dispatch.

What’s interesting to us in this video is the variation in how far people make it under the bridge. The trucks moving at low speed get hung up and stuck pretty quickly, but a few of the trucks make it all the way under, causing complete destruction of the box. At the end of the day the sides and top of the trailers and box trucks are made of light metals, plywood, and plastics, so when they get smashed into a giant steel beam, the giant steel beam always wins. They also lose structural integrity pretty quick once the sides or roof is compromised.

I live less than an hour from that bridge and so far the roof on my truck is good! I bet Budget, U-Haulk, Penske, Ryder, etc. go thru plenty of rental in that area.
