If you have ever wondered what it would sound like if you stuck a 3.6L 2-stroke Evinrude V8 that was formerly powering an outboard boat motor into the back of a sand rail with open headers and ran it all the way to redline a bunch of times on a chassis dyno, let this video serve as the answer to your dreams. We literally cannot imagine what it was like to stand in the shop when this thing got wrung out a bunch of times. The guys are holding their heads like the people in that movie scanners did just before they popped like melons! The 3.6L V8 was introduced by Evinrude in the 1980s and over the years there were varying power levels available. This one seems to be making somewhere around 240 or so at the tires while mounted in the back of the sand rail.
Yesterday we showed you the video of the supercharged Kawasaki sport bike and that thing sounds pretty mean at the top of its RPM range but this thing creates a tone that could shatter glass and send dogs running for 10 miles surrounding wherever it is running. We were trying to figure out the wheel speed that the buggy was generating on the rollers but the screen is never really in the right focus to get a clear idea.
An interesting thing happens when they first pull the buggy a couple of times in that the signal from the spark plug wires goes nutso every time the engine gets to the upper reaches of its RPM range and the engine is making about 240hp. You can watch the graph do some really wonky stuff when that goes down. They then switch the parameters up to have the dyno pay attention to wheelspeed and that seems to help some but we’re not sure if they got it fully sorted. Make no mistake, the thing is running OK it just seems that the dyno was as disturbed by the noise as the people standing next to the rig were.
We can honestly say that this is about as close to that thing as we want to get, mainly because WE get to drive the volume button while watching!
