While I was off announcing a drag race n Ohio and Chad was at home wrenching, lots of people in  Carlsbad, California decided to hit the beach for Independence Day. That seemed like a fine plan until a small plane literally whizzed over their heads by mere feet before catching the surf and flipping upside down on the water’s edge. The plane had been towing a banner style ad when it developed a mechanical problem. Ditching the ad, the 23-year old pilot did a pretty masterful job of gliding the completely powerless airplane out of the sky and onto the beach. With no power, the airplane was pretty much silent coming out of the sky which led to an interesting scenario…nobody ran.

Other than a 12-year old boy who got a gash in his head after being clipped by some portion of the airplane, there were no injuries, not even to the pilot. He managed to use the only clear strip of beach he could find and it paid off.
