Fred Williams has done some really cool stuff on his monthly “Dirt Every Day” show that runs on the Motor Tend channel but we’re thinking that this episode is one of the best. About the opposite of the over the top RV go kart and his insane army truck series, his revival of this killer 1961 Willys wagon is really cool because it combines the new and old elements as only truck guys have figured out how. Basically he’s able to slam a modern engine into the thing but keep the original transmission, axles, and suspension system. But we’re jumping ahead of ourselves here because the story how how he came to own this Willys is pretty good and it involves our old pal and serial owner of things Freiburger who we GUARANTEE will someday have this thing in his cadre of cars and trucks.
This video has all the good stuff. You get the discovery element of the Jeep, the mechanical end of stabbing the new engine into the thing and making it all fit, and then you get the cool footage of Fred actually wheeling in the truck through some cool trails. As they talk about in the video, the cool part about this rig is that it is not some over the top, huge dollar machine designed to romp and stop over the worst trails in America. Nope, this thing is a functional wheeler that you can take off road with your family, go exploring, and enjoy the scenery. It goes down the road it has brakes that literally don’t function, and it has a transfer case that whines the sweet mechanical noise that real gearheads love.
This is a cool truck and a pretty fun video. BangShift approved!
