Imagine our surprise when we looked at this video taken at the Liwa Oasis are of the UAE and we immediately started recognizing people. You’ll see blown alcohol engine builder and tuning master Al Billes laying his hands on one of the trucks, NHRA drag racer Khalid Al-Balooshi is seen both in and out of his truck, and then there are the companies like Speedtech, Sonny’s, and more providing the power. And what power it is. These four wheel drive trucks are screaming up a massive sand dune on a course that we’re guessing is about 600 feet long. They are using engines that are virtually identical to those found in the various pro modified series around the country. Huge inch nitrous bombs, blown combos, and more and they are putting all that power down into sand. Seriously, this is a case study in wheel speed right here.
The wildest thing in the video comes at (right around) the three minute mark. It is then when one of the nitrous powered competitors gets to the virtual top of the course and his engine explodes in spectacular fashion. Not only that, there is a raging fire that follows the explosion. What does he do? Smartly he kicks the truck into neutral and rolls that baby at the highest rate of speed he can to the bottom. The wind from him moving in reverse helps to keep him from turning into a crispy critter in there. Undoubtedly he was having a bit of a moment when all that took place.
It is cool to see how different trucks attack the course differently, choosing various spots on the bottom to launch from and applying the power differently as well. This is absolute wretched horsepower excess!
