There were so many variants of the Fox Mustang built both by Ford and other places back in the 1980s and 1990s that it seems like a fool’s errand to try and place them all. Because of that, every now and again we double take when seeing a car w forgot ever existed in the first place, even when the said car was a bad ass of its time. Take the 1992 SAAC Mark II Mustang for example. The Shelby American Automobile Club Mark II to be exact was about as awesome as it got for “factory” performance cars 30 years ago. The really expensive car (about $80,000 in today’s money) was capable of running to 60mph in just over five seconds and could run into the bottom half of the 13-second bracket as delivered. How? Hot rodding!
The convertible you see here was typical of the breed. It had upgraded wheels, tires, suspension, and brakes but it also carried better heads, camshaft, intake manifold, throttle body, and exhaust than its weaker GT base platform cousin. As you will see and hear in this report from MotorWeek, the SAAC cars were created in very limited volume. The organization claimed that they were only going to build some 250 examples. This is probably why we have never actually seen one in person. What are they worth today? God only knows, but to the right buyer, likely a pile of money.
