I do like dirt track racing. Back in the 70’s I planted my fat ass in the stands at the late great Santa Fe Speedway in Hinsdale, Illinois at least once a week for two full seasons. Back then the cars still used factory bodies, and one could easily tell a Camaro from a Nova or a Duster. I regularly took the first of my ex-wives on dates to Santa Fe Speedway. Which brings us to today’s installment of the Daily Tune Up.
Southern Culture On The Skids, or SCOTS as they are known to fans, have been around since the 80’s. They are noted for their blend of rockabilly, country and a little punk thrown in. They are also known for their sense of humor, and for throwing fried chicken into the audience at live shows. In 1995 they released the album Dirt Track Date, and the song of the same name. It’s about a guy taking his sweet young thang for an evening of dirt track racing. She has her hair piled up high, they dine on paper plates, and he gets overserved at the beer stand. Sure brings back memories for me. The song is accompanied by the sounds of hot laps, but my favorite part comes after the three minutes or so of music. The next five minutes seem to have been recorded during time trials or qualifying, as we hear cars one at a time slowing for a turn then whacking the throttle. The announcer tells us lap times in the background.
Yeah, that’s exactly what you think it is on the album cover. Remember the humor of SCOTS. Let’s give a listen, shall we?
