Hershel McGriff qualifies as a living legend, well he already did, but now it’s a no-brainer. The 81-year old McGriff whose racing career has spanned decades and has included four wins in the Cup series and nearly 40 in the West Series strapped in to compete this past weekend and compete he did.
He snagged a spot on the starting grid and then went and made use of it. He came in 13th in a field of 26, most of which were probably hot shot kids. Mcgriff last competed in this race, held on the Portland (Oregon) International Raceway road course in 2002 and for reasons probably known only to him, decided this was the year to make a comeback.
It’s a great story that’s sure to get lots of press in the coming days. For now, we’ll throw you a couple links to his qualifying effort and some background on one hell of a neat guy.
